Burna Boy picked up his second BET award for ‘Best International Act’ last night. But Rema did not pick up his first-ever BET award at the 20th Annual BET Awards. He would have become the youngest Nigerian to ever win the award if he had won.

Bet Awards
L-R: Chris brown, Sha Sha, Burna Boy, Meg Thee Stallion, and Wizkid.

The show was hosted by comedian, actress, recording-artiste, author, VJ and DJ, Amanda Seales who began the show by sharing some hard truths about the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement.

It was the first BET award show of its kind with all activities held online and on TV. The Coronavirus pandemic made the organizers change the format of the show this year. Yet, it was the biggest gathering of some of the most popular black people from across the world.

Living up to its name as the biggest black award in music, there were performances from over 20 of the biggest music stars in the US. Some of the biggest global acts like Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne, NAS, Meg The Stallion, Da Baby, Usher, Summer Walker and Chloe X Halle performed at the show.

There was a particularly memorable tribute performance for Kobe Bryant by Lil Wayne. Nipsey Hussle also received a posthumous award for ‘Video of the Year’ for his song, ‘Higher’ with DJ Khaled and John Legend.

Drake who received six nominations took home one award. He received the BET awards for his collaboration on Chris Brown’s ‘No Guidance’.

Meg The Stallion who received five nominations went home with two wins for ‘Viewers Choice Award’ and ‘Best Female Hip-Hop Artiste’.

Beyonce won the ‘HER’ award for her song, ‘Brown Skin Girl’. This means that Wizkid can add another BET credit to his resume. BET also celebrated Beyonce with a ‘Humanitarian’ award, presented by Michelle Obama.
